What
listeners say about the CD:
This CD is a triumphant
achievement on its own, and it is an essential accompaniment to
Elizabeth's book, The Last Aria. Listening to the music while
reading the novel is an extra-special experience.

Now that I've read
the translations, I'm even more impressed at Elizabeth's genius in
choosing exactly the right music to bring depth and richness to her
story. I'm going to reread the book and listen to the arias again...
and again.

The Goya and the Nightingale |
Why does the
nightingale amidst the shadows pour out her soul in
amorous song?
Has she a
grievance against the monarch of the day? Is this
how she avenges her wrong? Maybe she holds within her
breast a hidden grief and in darkness hopes to find
relief.
While
sadly intoning her song of love. Ay...... song of love.
Maybe
somewhere there is a rose, blushing at her modest
thoughts of love, who is the slave. The love-lorn song
enchanted slave, of the nightingale.
Mystic,
passionate song that she intones deep within her dewy
vale
Ah, how
like a flower love does see.
Like a flower borne on by the stream.
Ah,
without song...there is no
love
Ah, nightingale, your chanted song is love's sad tale. |

Visi D'arte from Tosca |
I lived for my art, I lived for love,
I never did harm to a living soul!
With a secret hand
I relieved as many misfortunes as I knew of.
Always with true faith
my prayer
rose to the holy shrines.
Always with true faith
I gave flowers to the altar.
In the hour of grief
why, why, o Lord,
why do you reward me thus?
I gave jewels for the Madonna’s mantle,
and I gave my song to the stars, to heaven,
which smiled with more beauty.
In the hour of grief
why, why, o Lord,
ah, why do you reward me thus?

(Che Gelida Manina) from La Boheme |
What a frozen little hand,
let me warm it for you.
What's the use of looking?
We won't find it in the dark.
But luckily
it's a moonlit night,
and the moon
is near us here.
Wait, mademoiselle,
I will tell you in two words,
who I am, what I do,
and how I live. May I?
Who am I? I am a poet.
What do I do? I write.
And how do I live? I live.
In my carefree poverty
I squander rhymes
and love songs like a lord.
When it comes to dreams and visions
and castles in the air,
I've the soul of a millionaire.
From time to time two thieves
steal all the jewels
out of my safe, two pretty eyes.
They came in with you just now,
and my customary dreams
my lovely dreams,
melted at once into thin air!
Bu the theft doesn't anger me,
for their place has been
taken by hope!
Now that you know all about me,
you tell me who you are.
Please do!

Yes,
like a small flower,
You have a sweet mouth
A little bit
withered.
Please give it to me,
give it to me
it's like a little rose
Give me a little kiss,
Give it to me, Cannetella!
Give one and take one,
a kiss as small
as your sweet mouth
which looks like a small
rose
a little bit
withered. |
